AARP Foundation Tax-Aide connects you with an IRS-certified volunteer who can help you file your return. What does IRS-certified mean? Simply that these volunteers have taken and passed tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards. They’ve also been trained on how to maintain the privacy and confidentiality of your personal and financial information.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide: Helps Older Adults Keep More of the Money They’ve Earned

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides tax assistance to anyone, free of charge, with a focus on taxpayers who are over 50 and have low to moderate income.

We are looking for volunteers who can work in a variety of roles.

Since 1968, Tax-Aide volunteers have served their communities and helped over 80 million people complete and file their tax returns nationwide. This year, nearly 28,000 Tax-Aide volunteers helped secure almost $1.3 billion in total refunds for nearly 1.7 million people. 

How does it work?

Once Tax-Aide is open for the tax season, you can get free help with your taxes from an IRS-certified tax counselor at a local Tax-Aide service site. You can book an appointment on our Appointments page.

Most Tax-Aide sites are located at community centers, libraries, schools, or other convenient locations in cities and towns across the country. 

What types of returns can Tax-Aide help with?

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide team can help with many, but not all, tax returns (small business with employees, rental income, or alternative minimum tax.

You don’t have to be an AARP member to receive tax prep help —  we offer free tax return preparation to anyone who needs it but focus primarily on those who are over 50 and living on a limited income.

What documents do I need for tax preparation?

You will need to bring your photo ID, social security card or ITIN, W-2 forms, and any and all relevant tax documents.

Couples who file jointly will need the above documents for both taxpayers.

You must bring the social security cards or ITIN's for all dependents.

How do I schedule an appointment?

Online and phone line appointments begin on January 6, 2025

Is the service really free?

Yes, the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide tax preparation and E-filing services are completely free, provided by trained and IRS certified volunteers.
